City is best for bikers thanks to park track
Platt Fields Park has helped Manchester to be named the best place in Britain for BMX bikers.
The Fallowfield park hosted two rounds of the BMC National Series during the summer, as part of a national competition.
And now the park has been voted as the top track by riders, spectators and organisers for having the best facilities for both competitors and onlookers.
The track is home to the Manchester BMX Club, which offers coaching, racing, and practice sessions. Councillor Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: ‘We’re delighted with how well the BMX track at Platt Fields Park has been received and with the fantastic reaction amongst those in the industry.’

On a fast track to 2012
Olympic cycling hopefuls will be able to train for the 2012 games at the new high-tech BMX racing track.
Sporting chiefs have already hailed the circuit in Platt Fields Park, as ‘a haven for our sporting champions of the future’.
It is set to become a crucial training ground for cyclists who get their first chance for a medal in four years.
The track is home to the new Manchester BMX Club, which offers coaching, racing and practice sessions. As well as careering for professional cyclists, the track allows residents to try out the sport for the first time and try out new skills.
With BMX Biking and Olympic discipline for the first time, Manchester Council built the track with the British Cycling Federation and £315, 000 in funding from Sport England.
Stewart Kellett, regional director of Sport England North-West, said: ‘Cycling in the North-West is going from strength to strength. The new facility gives many more people in Manchester the opportunity to get involved in ever-growing sport of BMX and cycling’.
Council spokesman Mike Kane said: ‘This track gives local residents of all ages an opportunity to get involved in the popular and ever growing sport of BMX and cycling’.
And British Cycling’s BMX co-ordinator Roger Wilbraham said: ‘I hope this will be a catalyst for other UK cities to embrace the positive community aspects porpoise-built racing facilities have to offer’.
